ATMIA Launches New Tool in the Continuing Fight Against Crypto Scams

ATMIA (the ATM Industry Association) announced that it has launched a new tool to aid in the continuing fight against cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) crimes of all types, including scams that target consumers.  Cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks have become one of the favored tools of con artists perpetrating romance, investment, arrest, and other forms of scams against unsuspecting consumers.

You suddenly receive a call on your cellphone that your son has been arrested.  And it may even be an AI (Artificial Intelligence) version that sounds exactly like your son.  Which begins a process to convince you to send a large sum of money to a fake police station, using a nearby Bitcoin kiosk.

ATMIA hosts the only global ATM crime database, the CCMIS (Crisis and Crime Management Intelligence System), which already contains over 47,000 incidents of ATM crime.  A “Crypto Incident” category has been added to the existing Fraud, Physical Attack, and Crisis categories.  ATMIA members and Law Enforcement can now use the database to record incidents of crypto crime in significant detail, including Theft, Fraud. Money Laundering, and Scams.

The database also allows users to access every incident it contains, along with the data that was collected.  Built-in heat maps and pie charts can display a view of current activity.  Crime trends can be analyzed by type and numerous levels of sub-categories.  And it is possible to restrict that data analysis to a specific group of countries/states over any period of time, from database initiation (May, 2021) to the present.

For more information on this resource, as well as the many additional benefits of ATMIA membership, explore the ATMIA database or reach out to our membership staff for more information.

ATMIA would also like to acknowledge and thank the Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center for its assistance in designing the database expansion to include crypto crimes of all types.
